27 January of every year marks the Thai Red Cross Youth Establishment Day. The Thai Red Cross Youth Bureau was established by Field Marshal Somdej Chaofa Paribatra Sukhumbhandu Krom Phra Nakhon Sawan Varaphinit on 27 January 1922. At the beginning of the establishment, the Red Cross Youth Bureau was named “the Junior Red Cross of Siam” and then the name was changed to “Junior Red Cross” and “Red Cross Youth” nowadays.
Ms. Sunantha Sornanusin, Director of the Thai Red Cross Youth Bureau, mentioned that the Bureau is responsible for teaching and training youth to ensure that they will have an understanding of the Fundamental Principles and ideology of the Red Cross and encourage them to take part in activities of the Thai Red Cross Society (TRCS) consistently. At present, the Thai Red Cross Youth Bureau focuses on knowledge and skill training for youth, especially in first aid and elderly care.
Red Cross youth volunteers have played a major role in assisting the TRCS’s activities. This year (2021), the Thai Red Cross Youth Bureau still emphasizes on empowering youth volunteerism by extending youth networks in every region.
